Trekking in the Moroccan Sahara – Erg Chegaga | Ultimate Desert Adventure

Depart from Marrakech early morning crossing the High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m). Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou kasbah. Continue through the Draa Valley, famous for its palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Arrive in Zagora, known as the gateway to the Sahara. Transfer to Faija where you'll meet your camel team and prepare for the desert trek. Dinner and overnight in a traditional guesthouse.

After breakfast, begin your Sahara desert trek. Load equipment onto camels and start walking through arid landscapes towards the Oum Laachar Pass. Experience the silence and vastness of the desert. Enjoy lunch in the shade of acacia trees. Continue to Oued Mhasser, a dry river bed surrounded by desert plains. Set up camp, enjoy traditional Berber tea, and watch the spectacular desert sunset. Dinner prepared by your camp cook and overnight under the stars.

Wake up early for a beautiful desert sunrise. After breakfast, continue trekking towards the magnificent Erg Chegaga dunes. The landscape transforms as you approach the towering sand dunes. Arrive at the edge of Chegaga, the largest erg (sand sea) in Morocco with dunes reaching up to 300 meters high. Set up camp at the base of the dunes. Climb to the top of a dune for breathtaking sunset views over the endless sand sea. Traditional dinner and Berber music around the campfire.

Full day exploring the spectacular Chegaga dunes. Optional morning climb to the highest dune for panoramic sunrise views. Trek through the sand sea, experiencing the changing light and colors of the desert. Learn desert navigation techniques from your Berber guides. After lunch, continue to the Bougarne dunes, a different area of the erg with unique formations. Set up camp in a secluded spot between dunes. Evening to relax and enjoy the absolute silence of the desert.

Depart from the dunes and trek across the reg (stony desert) towards Oued Naam. The changing landscape offers different desert ecosystems. Pass through areas with desert vegetation and possibly spot wildlife like desert foxes or fennecs. Arrive at Oued Naam, a seasonal river bed with tamarisk trees providing welcome shade. Set up camp near a natural water source. Evening discussion about desert survival and nomadic traditions with your guides.

Final morning of desert trekking to Mhamid, the last village before the Sahara. Say goodbye to your camel team and Berber guides. Transfer by 4x4 vehicle back through the Draa Valley. Stop for lunch and last views of the desert landscape. Begin the journey back to Marrakech, arriving in the evening. Check into your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved shower. Celebration dinner to mark the completion of your desert adventure.
